I was driving on the Mexico-Toluca toll highway yesterday in the even ing . One of the most dangerous highways in the country... Ironically not because of crime, but because of the steep elevation changes, islands of induced traffic, and difficult blind corners.
I was exiting a badly lit tunnel, some 1.5 km from the toll booth, when I saw a beat up Chrysler pacifica driving the wrong way without their lights, on the passing lane.
Everyone made a big fuss about it, I turned on my hazards and flicked my high beams, but it soldiered on; unfaced. Behind me, a brand new Mercedes GLB also did the ritual, and so did another car I could not make up the model of.
and I realized.... Not only did I find myself alarmed for an alarmingly short span of time (As in, I’ve internalized that these sort of stupid, dangerous things are just a regular occurrence in this god forsaken country ), but... why the hell were they doing that?
Being the toll road, it’s not like there are any exits they could’ve missed especially
so close to the toll booth
, and I don’t think any of the cops on the toll booth will be happy about some asshole in a Pacifica going the wrong way on the highway.
Also, if they were already inside the highway they must’ve
already
paid the toll... so why return to the toll booth? even if they made a mistake, just wait for the exits
after the toll section ends and be done with it... Such a pointlessly selfish and... dangerous... and stupid thing.
So many good
questions that seem to have no good answers.
I
also realized
that some of the worst drivers I’ve seen on the road are consistently Chrysler drivers. It’s strange because they don’t sell a lot of cars anymore, but Pacificas, town and countrys, and 300cs are consistently some of the cars I raise my eyebrow about in traffic. Also k-body cars... those drivers seem to have given up on life.

I’d broaden that to include all FCA products, especially Chargers and Challengers.

This reminds me of an incredibly dangerous thing I saw yesterday due to infrastructure problems:
I was driving along at 55 on a divided four lane road when I made out a dark object at the end if the bridge in front of me. HOLY CRAP THATS A MOTHER PUSHING A BABY STROLLER! RIGHT INTO THE INCOMING LANE!
I and the car in front of me quickly swerved into the other lane. Then it struck me: there is no possibly way to go across that creek on foot at all. If you don't have a car, you have to push your baby stroller and walk your family into the incoming lane (smartly) against heavy traffic inches from passing cars. I can't imagine the mindset required to do that.

Oh that’s also common here.

This one had no room to stand and the lanes were narrow. How? Why? Building a pedestrian bridge can’t be THAT expensive. Or just build a sidewalk into the bridge.
For some reason, lots of apartment buildings are built on major roads with no sidewalk and seem specifically designed to not encourage walking.

They probably ignored pedestrians for some reason. I have noticed that in Spain some B roads still use roman bridges that are (understandably) narrower than the rest of the road. Those roads have no sidewalks but there’s an understanding that pedestrians and cyclists can walk on the asphalt since there’s very little traffic and it’s unlikely they’d be hurt... But those are low density B roads, I can’t imagine that what you’re saying about apartments would occur

These are 55+ mph roads. Basically interstates with stoplights every mile or so. Yet most seem to deliberately leave out pedestrians. It is however rare for something so dangerous to occur, since usually the bridges have a shoulder. This one did not. Absolute insanity.

I just don’t get why, since these types of roads have some of the highest pedestrian traffic you’ll see away from city centers. No idea.
